Supporting Safer Internet Day

Coordinated in the UK by UK Safer Internet Centre,
The theme for 2022 is
All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online’.
From gaming and chat to streaming and video, young people are shaping the interactive entertainment spaces they are a part of. Safer Internet Day 2022 celebrates young people’s role in creating a safer internet, whether that is while gaming and creating content or interacting with their friends and peers. Using tailored learning materials, tips and resources for all ages as well as for educators and families, Safer Internet Day challenges everyone to play their part in fostering supportive relationships and respectful communities online.
So, whether you are a young person, a parent, grandparent or carer, a teacher or an educator, a policymaker, or whether you represent an organisation or industry, everyone has a role to play in creating and maintaining a better online world.

GAMING
Staying safe while playing games online.
Did you know….
74% of young people say online gaming can teach important skills like concentration and teamwork.
Online gaming is hugely popular with children and young people. Annual research conducted by OFCOM shows that gaming is still one of the top activities enjoyed online by 5–16-year-olds, with many of them gaming on mobile phones, games consoles, tablets or computers. To coincide with this year’s theme, we thought it would be appropriate to include some resources around gaming.

PARENTAL CONTROLS
Protecting young people from inappropriate content
Parental controls are designed to help protect children from inappropriate content online, such as pornography, age-restricted apps, or other adult content. These controls can be used in various ways, for example, to help ensure that children access only age-appropriate content, to set usage times, to monitor activity, or to help prevent in-app purchases.
Explain the limitations, check settings regularly and establish some rules. Find out more key tips on parents controls over on the UK Safer Internet Centre.
